Community Coordinated Burn Care Toolkit

Published: September 2024. Next review: 2029.

This toolkit provides training in burn care, first aid and aftercare to support treatment and recovery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in NSW.

It forms part of the Community Coordinated Burn Care (CCBC) program, which has been created in partnership by the Statewide Burn Injury Service, The George Institute for Global Health, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

The CCBC program aims to:

  • partner with ACCHS, build capacity to deliver burn care and facilitate a ‘hub-and-spoke’ model of care coordination
  • close the gap in local burn care prevention, first aid and ongoing burn care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • promote culturally safe care and foster relationships and understanding between ACCHS, tertiary burn services and local health services.

Who should use this toolkit

This toolkit of lectures, skill sessions and resources supports ACCHS services and staff working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in NSW to understand the different aspects of burn care and prevention.

Although the CCBC program focuses on children who have sustained a burn injury, ACCHS services can use the training to support all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with burns in NSW.

This project has the potential to be scaled up to Aboriginal medical services throughout Australia. The general information here can be used by Aboriginal health services in other states, and by other community health providers working with children and adults.
