This guide supports health professionals who use, or plan to use, patient-reported measures to provide culturally safe care to Aboriginal people across NSW.

Aboriginal people communicate in ways shaped by their culture, identity, community and connection to Country. This way of communicating builds trust, supports relationships and enables shared decision-making. Using culturally safe communication that recognises cultural and language differences leads to clearer understanding, stronger engagement and better care.

This yarning guide was co-created with Aboriginal Health Workers, Aboriginal leaders and patient-reported measures implementation leads. It supports Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal health professionals by:

  • encouraging meaningful conversations with people that support engagement with health services
  • building understanding of yarning and its role in supporting culturally safe use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs)
  • providing practice examples of how to yarn about PROMs in care settings.
