RhD immunoglobulin (RhD Ig), previously known as anti-D, protects against the development of haemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). HDFN can occur in a fetus or neonate born to women with the RhD negative blood group. HDFN has potentially serious consequences, and so prevention is vital.
RHD NIPT is a simple blood test used to determine the RhD blood type of the fetus for RhD negative women in pregnancy. The test result can determine whether an RhD negative woman requires RhD immunoglobulin prophylaxis.

Guideline
Published: January 2026. Next review: 2031.
The NSW Health RhD Immunoglobulin (RhD Ig) guideline provides direction to NSW maternity and neonatal service providers, emergency departments and general practitioners regarding the care of women in pregnancy with an RhD negative blood group and the use of RhD Ig.
It provides guidance to support informed decision making, valid consent and declining recommended care.
The guideline:
- supports clinicians by providing information on evidence-based screening and management
- provides information on RHD non-invasive prenatal testing (RHD NIPT) for fetal RhD blood group prediction in pregnancy
- replaces previous guideline: Maternity – Rh (D) Immunoglobulin (Anti D) GL2015_011.
