SHARE peer support program

The SHARE – Sharing Hope, Acceptance, Resilience and Experience – peer support program allows people with burn injury to meet other burn survivors.

Aims

The program aims to:

  • bring experience and knowledge of surviving a burn injury to burn patients
  • validate the shared experience of surviving a burn injury
  • convey hope and provide role models
  • create social contact.

Locations

The program runs at:

  • Concord Repatriation General Hospital
  • Royal North Shore Hospital
  • Graythwaite Rehabilitation Centre, Ryde Hospital.
If you are a burn survivor, talk to a member of your burn care team about connecting with this program.

Volunteers

A social worker supports the program volunteers. Volunteers receive comprehensive training to prepare them for challenges, like separating their own experience from that of the patient and managing the emotional impact of sharing their story.

Volunteers need to:

  • have had direct experience in recovering from a burn injury
  • be available for a minimum of two hours a month
  • participate in the recruitment and training program.
