Dialysis

This section provides information about dialysis and how it is used to treat chronic kidney disease.

Learn about:

  • what dialysis is and how it works
  • the different types of dialysis, including the benefits and risks of each
  • the different settings where dialysis can be performed, and how that can impact on quality of life.

When someone’s kidneys are no longer working, dialysis is used to clean their blood. There are 2 main types of dialysis, which can be delivered in different ways.

Dialysis helps to remove the body’s waste, extra salt and water, and helps to control blood pressure. It can relieve some, but not all, symptoms of kidney failure.

When receiving dialysis, patients will need to take multiple medications, follow fluid restrictions and modify their diet.
