Ambulatory hysteroscopy

Model of care

Published: May 2026. Next review: 2031.

This evidence‑based model of care supports NSW Health services to provide safe, same‑day ambulatory diagnostic hysteroscopy without general anaesthesia.

Shifting suitable procedures from operating theatres to ambulatory settings:

  • improves access to care
  • enhances the patient experience
  • uses health system resources more efficiently.

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows direct visualisation of the uterine cavity and supports targeted biopsy or treatment. Advances in endoscopic technology now make ambulatory care a practical option.

This model of care reduces reliance on general anaesthesia and theatre time; frees up hospital capacity; safely manages intrauterine conditions; shortens recovery time; and lowers the risk of complications.
