Acquired brain injury rehabilitation service delivery project: developing a model of care for rural and remote NSW

Published: October 2011. Next review: 2025.

Brain injury rehabilitation is delivered to rural and remote areas of NSW by the NSW Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program at Albury, Ballina, Bathurst, Coffs Harbour, Dubbo, Goulburn, Newcastle, Nowra, Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga and Wollongong. People receiving this care are challenged by distances and available resources.

This project explored the experience of consumers and service providers in rural and remote NSW.

Principles

The principles of the model of care that underpin the recommendations are:

  • That people with acquired brain injury in NSW should be able to access the essential services they need whether they are living in urban, rural or remote areas.
  • That the NSW Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program is committed to providing rehabilitation service delivery across all of NSW.
  • That culturally appropriate rehabilitation for Aboriginal people should be embedded in all services provided by the NSW Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program.
  • That families are integral to the process of rehabilitation service delivery.
