We originally published the Nutrition Standards as part of a suite of documents that help manage nutrition and diet in NSW Health facilities. These resources were developed with guidance from the Nutrition in Hospitals Working Group.
The original suite of documents included:
- Nutrition Standards for Adult Inpatients in NSW Hospitals, 2011
- Nutrition Standards for Paediatric Inpatients in NSW Hospitals, 2011
- Nutrition Standards for Consumers of Inpatient Mental Health Services in NSW, 2013
- Therapeutic diet specifications for adult inpatients, 2011
- Therapeutic diet specifications for paediatric inpatients, 2012
2024 revision of the Nutrition Standards
The Nutrition in Hospitals Committee began the review process of the Nutrition Standards in 2020.
The process included:
- Formation of the Nutrition Standards Reference Group
- Evidence reviews – including literature and patient admission data
- Stakeholder consultation (formative) – engaging clinicians, food service providers and food industry partners
- Consumer consultation – using a consumer jury format (formative)
- System-wide confirmatory consultation process
The updated Nutrition Standards were published in 2024, combining the three original standards documents into a single digital publication.
