Appropriate water quality is one of the most important aspects of ensuring the safe and effective delivery of haemodialysis.

This document guides the provision of safe water for patients receiving haemodialysis therapy. It includes the design, operation and maintenance for water pre-treatment and reverse osmosis water plant and reverse osmosis systems for in-centre and satellite units and at home.

The guide is based on the maximum level of known or suspected harmful contaminants that may be present in product water to be used for the preparation of dialysing fluids, as specified by the International Organization for Standardization. The document details the water pre-treatment systems and practices needed to achieve and maintain these levels.
