Consultation: Colonoscopy categorisation

Clinical practice guide

We are seeking feedback on the revised draft NSW colonoscopy categorisation clinical practice guide.

The guide aims to support appropriate prioritisation of patients, improve consistency in decision making and ensure timely access to colonoscopy services.

We are seeking feedback from stakeholders in local health districts and specialty health networks, involved in referring and triaging patients for colonoscopy including the following disciplines:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgery
  • Anaesthesia
  • Oncology
  • Nursing
  • Primary care

Key updates in this revision include:

  • Aligned with current NSW policy and national standards
  • Clarified scope, including exclusion of urgent and emergency cases
  • Strengthened referral, triage and communication requirements
  • Improved consistency in categorisation and prioritisation
  • Added guidance on iFOBT, surveillance and bidirectional endoscopy
  • Expanded equity, cultural safety and inclusive care content
  • Improved information sharing, follow-up and statewide consistency

The consultation period closes on Monday 20 July 2026.
