Stem cell transplantation for multiple sclerosis

Published: July 2025. Next review: 2027.

Autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplant is a strong immune treatment for multiple sclerosis. It can lead to long-lasting remission, stopping or even reversing neurological disability in certain patients.

This transplant delivers high-dose chemotherapy safely, using the patient’s own stem cells to help their immune system recover and reduce the time they have low white blood cells.

The clinical practice guide provides detail on:

  • evaluation of the treatment
  • referral from consultant physician to the transplant centre
  • the patient assessment process with inclusion and exclusion criteria
  • suggested protocol for mobilisation and transplantation
  • patient follow-up.
