Extended Day Only
The Extended Day Only (EDO) model of care has been implemented by Area Health Services since June 2005. The Extended Day Only Model has been promoted by the NSW Surgical Services Taskforce and about 80% of all surgery is suitable for EDO management.
The model is based on the premise that the majority of surgical care can be administered within a period of less than 24 hours. It is sometimes also referred to as 23 hour care.
Key features
Key features of the EDO Model include:
- Selection of suitable patients and procedures that can be managed in an episode of care of up to 24 hours, by pre admission screening processes.
- Patients are managed by clinical protocols that are used to inform, direct and record care from admission to discharge.
- Staggered patient admission times.
Key advantages
Key advantages of the EDO Model include:
- Predictable access to surgical beds
- Standardised patient care with better patient outcomes
- Efficient use of hospital resources
