Perioperative Toolkit

Published: May 2024. Next review: 2029.

The Perioperative Toolkit supports surgical services in NSW public hospitals to optimise care and outcomes. This includes metropolitan, regional and rural facilities.

Patients receive perioperative care when they are having a surgery or procedure. Perioperative care includes the period from referral through to discharge and rehabilitation.

The perioperative care team includes a range of clinicians and health professionals from community, inpatient and outpatient settings. Each stage of the perioperative care journey requires communication and collaboration.

The toolkit provides information and resources to assist:

  • continuous quality improvement of perioperative structures, processes and outcomes
  • knowledge sharing and collaboration among members of the multidisciplinary perioperative team.

Virtual care

Use virtual care across the patient perioperative journey, if clinically appropriate. This allows flexibility for consumers, their families and carers.

The Virtual Care in Practice Guide provides information on how to use technology to deliver care remotely.
