The AI Framework establishes recommended practices for the adoption and implementation of AI technologies by NSW Health entities.

Given the rapidly evolving nature of AI, the framework will be regularly reviewed and updated to remain current and responsive to emerging developments.

The NSW Health AI Taskforce led the development of this framework, which aims to achieve the following outcomes:

  • NSW Health personnel have access to clear, actionable guidance on AI use, ensuring safe, ethical and effective integration into clinical and operational workflows.
  • NSW Health staff understand the AI landscape from a national and state lens, as well as the internal governance structures available alongside the Taskforce, including the eHealth NSW AI Advisory Service.
  • Stakeholders, including clinicians, patients and the public, are well-informed through transparent communication about how AI is considered and used within NSW Health.

Method

This framework is informed by:

  • national and state government requirements
  • evidence generated by the Critical Intelligence Unit, including scientific and grey literature
  • recommendations from the NSW Health AI Taskforce Working Group
  • consultation with key government groups and external partners
  • the Australian Alliance for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (AAAiH) Roadmap.

Focus areas

The framework focuses on 7 priority areas, adapted from the AAAiH Roadmap1 priorities. Each priority area considers the following within the NSW Health context:

  • Principles: outlines the fundamental values that underpin the safe and responsible use of AI across NSW Health.
  • Policy and guidance: identifies current NSW Health policy and strategy artefacts that intersect with AI initiatives; to ensure standardised, safe, efficient and consistent delivery of healthcare.
  • Practice: provides guidance on how to effectively integrate AI into current workflows and operations, and summarises potential challenges and opportunities.
