High Volume Short Stay Surgery

Published: October 2024. Next review: 2029.

This toolkit supports health facilities in NSW to plan and set up the best way to deliver a high volume of surgeries for patients needing a short hospital stay.

The high volume short stay (HVSS) surgery model is a surgical unit that delivers planned surgery or procedures that require patients to be admitted for up to 72 hours. This includes same day and extended day only cases.

There are three main organisational models that health services can use to establish a HVSS surgery unit. The resourcing, infrastructure and wider surgical service models at each facility will determine the most appropriate model to use.

This toolkit provides information and resources to assist:

  • decision making about which type of HVSS surgical model is best suited for the circumstances
  • planning and setting up a HVSS surgical unit.
