New podcast supports health professionals responding to violence, abuse and neglect

27 Jun 2023 Reading time approximately

The ACI recently launched its first ever podcast series, Making Visible: Preventing and responding to violence, abuse and neglect. Learn how it can support health professionals to deliver best practice therapeutic care to patients and clients.

Developed in collaboration with the University of Wollongong and an expert reference group from across NSW Health, Making visible aims to support social workers, psychologists and other healthcare professionals to prevent and respond to family and domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and neglect.

In this four-part series, listeners will hear directly from professionals working in the sector, talking about:

  • cases and experiences in the field (noting these are deidentified, amalgamated stories to protect people’s privacy)
  • ways to support clients
  • how to manage on a personal level.

Making visible is hosted by Lis Murphy and University of Wollongong’s Dr Mim Fox from the popular series The Social Work Stories Podcast.

In each episode, you'll hear two really powerful stories from practitioners, and then Lis and I debrief and analyse them. Together, they create quite a great landscape of the work being done in all these really difficult but important fields of practice.

Deidentified health and social workers share their experiences and learnings on the podcast. “What keeps me going is the women I work to support, because I am amazed by their resilience,” says one of the health workers.

Dr Ben Joseph, Lecturer of Social Work, University of Western Sydney, was also involved in the production, along with contributors from the ACI’s Violence, Abuse and Neglect (VAN) Network, Consumer Experience and Communications teams, as well as NSW Health’s Prevention and Response to Violence, Abuse and Neglect (PARVAN).

Early feedback from clinicians has been positive, says Ben: “They’re telling us that they can see and hear themselves in the stories being told. They’ve also shared that listening has built confidence in their own practice.” Some clinicians are also listening to an episode together and using it as the basis for professional development discussion.

“Everyone who listens will gain a real insight into the work of these health professionals and how they tackle the daily challenges by listening to Making visible,” says Louise Dever, ACI’s VAN Network Manager. “It’s been a fantastic collaboration with our partners and the ACI looks forward to working with the same team on a second podcast series in 2024.”
