Be Pain Smart Clinic
The Agency for Clinical Innovation, with funding from the icare Foundation, developed an integrated chronic pain consultative clinic for people with chronic pain after a spinal cord injury and/or traumatic brain injury – the Be Pain Smart Clinic.
The Be Pain Smart Clinic provides:
- A multi-disciplinary pain clinic, staffed by clinicians (doctors, physiotherapist and psychologist) with a specialised background in pain management working together with brain injury or spinal cord injury specialist teams
- A multi-disciplinary pain assessment and management plans for people with chronic pain following a spinal cord injury and/or a moderate/severe traumatic brain injury.
- Consultation and liaison with local GPs, allied health providers and case managers.
- The pain team will provide ad-hoc mentoring and support to NSW clinicians as required.
Adult service
The adult service is located at the Michael J Cousins – Pain Management and Research Centre at Royal North Shore Hospital – Douglas Building, Level 2, Reserve Road, St Leonards.
The clinic runs weekly providing face-to-face and tele-health consults to patients with pain and a spinal cord injury and/or brain injury across NSW. To refer to the clinic, please email NSLHD-bepainsmart@health.nsw.gov.au. Referrals will be triaged according to their clinical priority, location and funding status. Telehealth consultations are available for rural and remote people or upon request.

In addition to providing a multi-disciplinary pain assessment and pain management plan, patients can also access an individually tailored pain management program delivered by clinicians with specialised knowledge in chronic pain, spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.
Children's service
The children’s service is located at the Children’s Hospital Westmead - Corner Hawkesbury Road and Hainsworth Street, Westmead.
