There are many easy ways to show that your CAMHS or other mental health service is a welcoming, affirming space for LGBTIQ+ young people.
Physical environment
- Display affirming signage such as posters, brochures, pride flags art or messages of support that consider LGBTIQ+ identities.
- Use diverse imagery in waiting areas and information materials that represent a range of identities and relationships.
- Offer gender-neutral or inclusive bathrooms to ensure that all individuals feel comfortable and safe.
- Choose inclusive decor that avoids reinforcing stereotypes. For example, avoid traditional gendered colours and instead opt for neutral or inclusive designs.
- Provide comfortable waiting areas to create an inviting atmosphere, and avoid layouts that might make clients feel isolated or uncomfortable. Aim for a quiet area with limited foot traffic, ergonomic seating and a clear view of, and access to, exits.
- Ensure accessibility for clients with physical disabilities and visual or hearing impairments. This could include use of ramps, elevators, signage, accessible bathrooms and appropriately trained staff.
- Consider accessibility for neurodiverse clients, including lower lighting where possible; being mindful of noise and strong scents; and providing sensory supports, such as fidget toys and colouring books in clinical settings.
