Increasing knowledge of parents and carers

Helping parents and carers to understand the needs of their LGBTIQ+ young person is key to providing comprehensive care.

Parents and carers may be having new experiences, learning new concepts and terminology, and facing new challenges. Equipping them with the right knowledge and resources can help them to support their LGBTIQ+ young person.

Informed parents and carers:

  • can play a vital role in creating a supportive and affirming environment at home, and in the community
  • are better equipped to provide the right support, reduce stigma and foster acceptance
  • understand what their young person is going through and have the tools to offer meaningful support.

Clinicians can support and encourage parents and carers on their learning journey by providing resources to build knowledge and understanding, including:

      • educational materials
      • linking to workshops and training
      • facilitating open communication
      • identifying and linking to support networks (see below)
      • learning about the importance of affirming practices.

      Building support networks

Building robust support networks is essential for parents and carers, as well as LGBTIQ+ young people themselves.

By actively fostering networks and connections, you can support the whole family to build the strong, supportive relationships they need to thrive, and help them to navigate challenges.

Supportive networks enhance family dynamics and promote acceptance and understanding. They provide:

      • guidance in unfamiliar territory, valuable knowledge and shared experiences
      • emotional support
      • connectedness and a sense of community
      • access to practical resources.

You can help families and carers to build and engage with these networks by:

      • providing information on community resources
      • encouraging positive relationships and connections with families in similar situations
      • connecting to support groups.
