Pneumonia Aetiology

  • Streptococcus pneumonia = commonest cause

  • Atypical bacteria (Mycoplasma, Chlamydia, Legionella)

  • Viral pathogens in up to 15%

  • Classically, influenza is complicated by a Staphylococcal superinfection

  • No organism is identified in 50%
