Violence, Abuse and Neglect
Whilst working in Emergency, there may be occasions when you suspect a patient may be at risk of violence, abuse or neglect. Health workers need to be open to the possibility that child abuse (including sexual) and neglect, domestic violence or elder abuse may be occurring.
Abuse can span across all age groups, such as:
- Child Abuse and Neglect
- Child/Young Person Sexual Abuse
- Adult Sexual Assault
- Domestic and Family Violence
- Elder Abuse
Dr Maria Nittis (Department Head, Forensic Medical Unit, Western Sydney & Nepean Blue Mountains LHDs) gave an excellent talk at the ECI ED Leadership Forum on 9 June 2017, entitled Domestic Violence: clinical and legal aspects. We would strongly encourage you to watch it.
