Funding

Emergency departments in NSW are primarily funded via an Activity Based Funding (ABF) model.

The model was established as part of the National Health Reform Agreement. ABF is a reimbursement model that allocates financial resources based on the volume and complexity of the healthcare services provided. Emergency department patient presentations are grouped according to the Australian Emergency Care Classification, which determines the level of funding provided.
