Enabling innovation
and change

We support innovation and capability building across NSW Health, empowering and educating staff through education, training and support for locally implemented projects.

Building capability to innovate through redesign

We are partnering across the system to build capability in healthcare redesign and change management to drive innovation, locally.

Each year, our Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Redesign course teaches up to 90 frontline staff vital skills in health service improvement and innovation, project and change management. In 2023, project teams were challenged to include environmental sustainability as a measure of success. View their projects on the Innovation Exchange.

We are applying a range of redesign and change management approaches on the NSW Government’s menopause initiative and the Safeguards model of care to support children and young people experiencing mental health crisis. Workshops, drop-in sessions, events and individual coaching are providing necessary supports to local project teams to implement new approaches to care in their area.

Safeguards teams are new child and adolescent mental health teams being progressively established across NSW Health. In June, we hosted two workshops in partnership with the Mental Health Branch, to enhance the capability of Safeguards teams (pictured) around healthcare redesign.

We facilitated workshops for NSW Health staff who manage or participate in change projects, to learn and apply Accelerated Implementation Methodology (AIM) This included workshops for:

  • change and adoption specialists in eHealth NSW to support major transformation programs
  • Net Zero Leads and Sustainability Officers, supporting them to develop and implement scalable, low-carbon models of care for NSW.

“We continue to build a toolbox of methods to develop flexible and responsive approaches that support culture and behaviour change. It is also important to provide opportunities that share knowledge and showcase local innovations.”
