Our people

We take a holistic approach to the way we work that supports wellbeing, flexibility and diversity. We value the opportunity to collaborate virtually and in person, and we celebrate our professional achievements together.

Connecting and sharing

Our first in-person ACI Staff Forum in three years provided an opportunity to reconnect, collaborate and reflect on how we can bring our new strategy to life. Guest speakers included NSW Health Secretary Susan Pearce AM (pictured right), and Sam Bloom (left), who inspired us all with her story of recovery from a near-fatal injury, and the physical and mental challenges she has faced.

Responding to staff feedback

The ACI had a 100% response rate to our 2023 People Matter Employee Survey, with positive results in many areas compared with the public sector overall and the health cluster.

Our staff reported the following satisfaction ratings:

  • 72% for engagement, which remains steady
  • 81% for risk and innovation
  • 85% for ethics and values
  • 81% for job purpose and enrichment
  • 91% for flexible working, which continues to be our most highly rated response

A focus on staff wellbeing

In response to staff feedback, wellbeing has been a focus for meaningful organisational development over the past year. Initiatives included:

  • a Work on Wellbeing (WoW) self-assessment available to all staff, including opportunities for individual and group coaching
  • webinars and development opportunities for staff and managers focused on wellbeing and mental health in the workplace
  • staff engagement with activities such as RUOK Day and Mental Health Month.

Showcasing arts in health

We had the opportunity to participate in the Elevate art exhibition and activities at our St Leonards office. Led by Health Infrastructure and the Ministry of Health, the event showcased the therapeutic and wellbeing impacts of the arts on NSW Health staff and consumers.

Celebrating our success

In May, we came together to celebrate the ACI Staff Excellence Awards, recognising individual and team achievements in categories such as innovation, project excellence, consumer engagement and Aboriginal Health.

The ‘Be sustainable’ theme was carried throughout the event, from the venue to the decorations and dress code.

Connecting through Aboriginal culture

Our Aboriginal Cultural Competency Advocates continued to lead initiatives that bring staff together to experience, share and connect with Aboriginal culture across the ACI and our work.

  • We commenced the Reading Opens Doors Book Club for staff, in support of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
  • Provided opportunities for staff to connect to tradition and culture through Aboriginal-led tours of the Sydney Botanic Garden and the Yiribana Gallery at the Art Gallery of NSW.
  • Updated our internal Framework for Working with Aboriginal People and Communities; along with a toolkit to support its use.
  • Continued our monthly Muurung Junyirri yarning circles, bringing staff together to share stories, get project support and learn from peers.

We continue to promote alignment with our Statement of Commitment and our Aboriginal Employment Strategy, including the creation of a new executive role for Aboriginal Health in 2024.
