Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta

Published: July 2021. Next review: 2026.

Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is a procedure that involves placement of an endovascular balloon in the aorta to temporarily control non-compressible torso haemorrhage.

It offers a potential solution to bridge a patient with critical torso haemorrhage to definitive haemorrhage control.

This evidence report aims to provide:

  • a rapid evidence review on REBOA use in trauma
  • a NSW gap analysis assessing potential REBOA cohort
  • insights and next steps on the potential use of REBOA in NSW.
