Improving
clinical practice

We inform best practice, evidence-based healthcare in NSW by supporting continuous improvement and refining healthcare practices to meet patient needs.

Delivering impactful resources to support best practice clinical care

Throughout 2025, our clinical networks produced 100+ resources, providing the latest evidence-based information, tools and guidance to clinicians and the health system:

  • Clinical practice guides
  • Models of care
  • Fact sheets
  • Toolkits
  • Digital guides
Burn physiotherapy and occupational therapy clinical practice guide

We’ve produced a range of videos to explain clinical procedures or clinical environments. For example:

  • training videos cover autonomic dysreflexia, including prevention and management for people with a spinal cord injury
  • our virtual care conversation starters demonstrate how consumers can confidently ask about virtual care; and how health providers might respond to find the best care options together.

New statewide rehabilitation model of care

The new Rehabilitation Model of Care outlines a future-focused approach to delivering effective multidisciplinary rehabilitation services across NSW Health.

  • The model supports health leaders, planners and clinicians to provide equitable resources, flexible care options and consistent processes for adults needing rehabilitation care in NSW.
  • Underpinned by 9 guiding principles, the model reflects the latest evidence and best practice care. It positions rehabilitation as an essential component of health service planning and care delivery.
  • It is presented in a new web-based format, making it practical and accessible for clinicians and health service managers providing rehabilitation care.

Keeping patients informed about their care

Consumers co-designed practical tools and resources that improve care experiences and provide culturally appropriate, evidence-based guidance.

Collaborating to support a universal approach to aftercare services

We partnered with the Ministry of Health, primary health networks and community organisations to develop a Universal Aftercare Service Delivery Model for providers who are supporting people following a suicide attempt or suicidal crisis.

Launched at the NSW Universal Aftercare Forum in June, the model:

  • includes practical web-based guidance and tools help people working in suicide prevention settings to provide best practice follow-up support
  • can be adapted locally to improve safety, consistency and effectiveness.
  • includes support for people at higher risk of suicide and considerations for priority populations.
  • provides practical considerations for governance and workforce development.

10-year plan to advance the NSW trauma system

Our Institute of Trauma and Injury Management has developed a new 10-year plan to advance the trauma system and improve outcomes for severely injured people in NSW. Over six priority areas, the plan aims to:

  • reduce the incidence and severity of injuries
  • enhance care delivery and support recovery
  • prioritise equitable access, including for rural, regional and Aboriginal people.
