Statewide specialist services

The statewide specialist services are a component of the NSW trauma system, comprising of the NSW Severe Burns Injury Service (SBIS) and the NSW State Spinal Cord Injury Service (SSCIS). These two services are clinical networks of the Agency for Clinical Innovation and are networked with the trauma services of NSW.

NSW Severe Burn Injury Service

The NSW SBIS, established in 2003, coordinates and provides management of patients who have sustained a severe burn injury. The NSW SBIS is comprised of three Severe Burn Units located at:

  • Royal North Shore Hospital;
  • Concord Repatriation General Hospital; and
  • The Children's Hospital at Westmead
These are the tertiary referral units for all burns in NSW that meet the transfer criteria found in the Burns Transfer Guidelines (2nd Ed, 2008)

NSW State Spinal Cord Injury Service

The NSW SSCIS is responsible for the management of patients who have sustained a spinal cord injury where there is persistent neurological deficit. The NSW SSCIS is comprised of four Spinal Cord Injury Units located at:

  • Royal North Shore Hospital;
  • Prince of Wales Hospital;
  • The Children's Hospital at Westmead; and
  • Sydney Children's Hospital.
