Area Trauma Nurse Coordinator 

The Area Trauma Nurse Coordinator, a Clinical Nurse Consultant position, is responsible for the support and coordination of the Local Health District Injury Management Program. Under the direction of the Trauma Director and in partnership with the Trauma Nurse Coordinator, the Area Trauma Nurse Coordinator will have a reporting line to the Network Trauma Committee.

The tasks, which accompany the function of the Area Trauma Nurse Coordinator, include:

Clinical Activities

  • Provides clinical leadership and expert advice on the management of trauma patients to staff in the Local Health District (LHD) local hospitals
  • Coordinates the introduction of a “Trauma Response” within the local hospital and conducts occasional audits of the response process in collaboration with the LHD local hospital's Emergency Departments
  • Relieves the Trauma Nurse Coordinator for annual leave and as necessary by mutual agreement with the trauma service
  • Participates in multidisciplinary Trauma Rounds at the Major Trauma Service (MTS)

Quality Management

  • Collection of specified data relating to seriously injured patients presenting to LHD local hospitals
  • Ensure data is entered into the LHD Trauma Registry in a timely fashion
  • Identifies specified Trauma Admissions to the LHD local hospital
  • Performs concurrent review of targeted medical records, evaluating the process of care
  • Identify local hospital in-hospital trauma deaths for referral to the MTS for inclusion in the peer review death audit process
  • Facilitates ”loop closure” within the quality management process and documents actions taken both within the LHD local hospital and between the MTS and the LHD local hospitals
  • Identifies trauma system related opportunities for improvement and directs relevant information to the Network Trauma Committee for evaluation and referral
  • Monitors Trauma 1 transport decisions transports to the LHD local hospitals and reports protocol breakdown to the Network Trauma Committee


  • Works in partnership with LHD local hospital staff to develop policy and procedure for the management of trauma patients
  • Facilitates feedback to the LHD local hospitals from the MTS regarding clinical/administrative management issues
  • Attends Network Trauma Committee meetings
  • Attends Network Critical Care Committee meetings
  • Provides six monthly reports, detailing activities, to the Network Trauma Committee Reports to the LHD Director of Nursing quarterly.


  • Coordinates and collaborates on educational activities necessary to meet the needs of the LHD local hospitals
  • Liaises with the MTS to facilitate education programs within the LHD local hospitals
  • Conducts regular trauma patient review meetings for the local hospital staff, with specific reference to transferred patients
  • Encourages LHD local hospital staff participation at external trauma education programs and conferences
  • Participates in the RACS EMST program and or TNCC Program (Minimum one course per year)
  • Attends trauma education programs / conferences to maintain own professional education, minimum of one program / conference per year


  • Participates in research programs coordinated by the Network Trauma Committee / MTS
  • Initiates research in relation to injury management or the trauma system
  • Prepares papers for publication and presents papers at meetings / conferences
  • Encourages and mentors research participation amongst LHD local hospitals.
