The NSW intensive care unit (ICU) nursing clinical pathway provides a professional development framework to facilitate the delivery of clinical care and career direction planning for intensive care nurses.

The document recognises the various professional pathways that ICU nursing can offer. It allows clinicians to progress at their own pace, developing skills to enhance their practice, based on the level of ICU they are employed in.

NSW intensive care unit nursing clinical pathway

Background

The nursing clinical pathway was developed in response to feedback from the ACI Intensive Care NSW (ICNSW) nurse leaders group. It was identified that ICU nurses need greater guidance for their professional development and career progression.

We would like to acknowledge the representatives from the following groups who led the development of this pathway:

  • ICNSW nurse leaders group, including nurse unit managers, clinical nurse consultants and nurse educators, from metropolitan and rural NSW
  • The Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCCN)
