2015 Patient Experience Symposium
Over 400 consumers, clinicians and managers came together at the NSW Patient Experience Symposium on Friday to share their passion for consumer driven improvements in healthcare, and learn more about how to use patient experience to design and promote better healthcare. The Symposium gave delegates an opportunity to hear from experts in the field, share local innovations in improving patient experience and learn more about Patient Reported Outcome Measures.
The event was officially launched by the Minister for Health, The Hon. Jillian Skinner MP and was the outcome of a successful collaboration between the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI), Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC), Bureau of Health Information, Cancer Institute NSW, New South Wales Kids and Families, the Nursing and Midwifery Office and NSW Ministry of Health. It was held during 'Patient Experience Week', which is an annual event to celebrate healthcare staff positively impacting patient experience every day. The event was targeted at NSW Local Health District and Specialty Network staff and their consumer advisors.
Keynote speakers Patrick Charmel, CEO Griffin Hospital, USA and Chair of Planetree; and Dan Wellings, Head of Insight and Feedback, NHS, England shared lessons learnt and provided valuable international insight to improve the patient experience.
Themes for discussion throughout the day included:
- Meaningful measurement of patient experience
- Patient experience driving service improvement
- Diversity in experience of care
- Partnerships to improve quality of care
- Staff engagement and empathy
- System drivers for improving patient experience
Most sessions were recorded, including the plenary talks, and will be made available after the event online. Social media also played an important role in raising awareness and expanding the conversation, allowing participants to share lessons learnt via tweets using the hashtag #patientexperience.
