Preoperative Fasting and Oral Fluids

The ACI Nutrition Network, in collaboration with the Anaesthesia Perioperative Care and Endocrine Networks, has released two new diet specifications to help hospitals prepare patients for surgery and some procedures. To support this, the Networks have also developed implementation advice for clinicians and food services staff and a document outlining general principles for fasting in NSW public hospitals.

The aim of this work is to minimise cancellations of surgery as result of fasting interpretation by clinicians, to provide better quality of care to patients, particularly the frail aged and to assist facilities achieving the Standard set by the Australian Commission of Quality & Safety in Healthcare on delirium.
