Donor site management for burn patients
This document provides specific advice and direction for managing a donor site, where tissue is harvested to provide cover to replace a defect on the body.
This document was designed to accompany the Burn Patient Management guide and the Skin Graft Management for Burn Patients. This document will be reviewed every five years, or more frequently if indicated, and updated as required with current information at that time.
The guide provides an overview of:
- donor site dressing options
- how donor skin is harvested in operating theatres
- procedures for dressing the site
- how and when to inspect a donor site
- how to remove dressings.
Clinicians working outside a specialist burn unit are encouraged to liaise closely with their colleagues within the specialist units for advice and support in burn patient management, including follow-up care post-discharge.
