Unwarranted Clinical Variation Action Plan – Consumer and Community Consultations

24 May 2021, 12:00am to 25 June 2021, 12:00am

The Agency for Clinical Innovation is developing an action plan to help address unwarranted clinical variation in NSW.

We are hosting a series of consultations to establish consumer and community values and preferences to inform the action plan.

What is unwarranted clinical variation?

People in NSW should have equal access to high quality health care – in the right place, at the right time.

Sometimes, people with the same condition can experience different treatment, experiences and outcomes across the state. These differences are often referred to as clinical variation.  Sometimes the variation is warranted or can be explained. But other differences are unwarranted and shouldn’t be occurring.

Our background paper on unwarranted clinical variation in healthcare includes our formal definition:

“Patient care that differs in ways that are not a direct and proportionate response to available evidence; or to the healthcare needs and informed choices of patients.”
