  1. To better understand the background and rationale for consumer and family engagement to prevent and reduce restrictive practices.
  2. Showcase local initiatives of collaboration and reflect on their outcomes/impacts.
  3. To identify practical strategies, ideas and tools to assist LHDs/SHNs to strengthen collaborative practices and processes.

The Review of seclusion, restraint and observation of consumers with a mental illness in NSW Health facilities made 19 recommendations which were accepted by the NSW Government (December 2017). A Mental Health Safety and Quality in NSW: Implementation plan was finalised in May 2018. The ACI Mental Health Network is responsible for developing key principles and practical strategies to strengthen consumer and carer engagement at the service level. This initiative has arisen from Action 11 from the implementation plan.

The forum will provide an opportunity to showcase examples of collaborative practices and processes and to work with participants to identify strategies and ideas that may promote cultures of collaboration between clinicians, consumers and carers. The work from the forum will help inform and refine a guide that will be available for further consultation in November.
