Trauma Patient Reported Measures
The Trauma Patient Reported Measures (PRMs) program aims to enable trauma patients to provide direct, timely feedback about their injury-related outcomes and experiences. This will drive improvement across the NSW trauma system.
The program is a vital part of a broader project known as the Trauma Outcomes and Quality Registry Evaluation (TORQUE) being undertaken by the NSW Institute of Trauma and Injury Management.
Overview of PRMs
About trauma PRMs
Patients will provide direct, timely feedback about their health-related outcomes and experiences to improve trauma care and clinical interactions. The data collected through this program, in combination with the trauma data collected in the hospital clinical setting, will be used to improve clinical practice and quality of life, identify excellence in trauma care and drive system-wide improvements.
The trauma PRMs program includes two types of surveys:
- Patient reported experience measures, known as PREMs.
- Patient reported outcome measures, known as PROMs
Patient reported experience measures (PREMs)
PREMs surveys are conducted one month after discharge from hospital. When a patient completes a survey about their experience of receiving care, their feedback is anonymous. PREMs help us to gain valuable information about what we are doing well and what areas we need to focus on.
The trauma PREMs survey consists of six questions taken from the bank of NSW Health patient satisfaction questions.
Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs)
PROMs surveys are conducted one month after discharge and then repeated at six and twelve months to identify as changes over time. When patients share information about their health condition and wellbeing (PROMs survey), the survey is shared with their healthcare provider/s.
The responses help the healthcare provider/s to better understand what matters most to the patient. The information they share in the survey can be a useful conversation starter about issues that are bothering them, and how your overall health impacts on different parts of your life.
The trauma PROMs surveys consists of the following components:
- Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS-29) survey which includes questions about a patients physical, mental and social health.
- Health utilisation survey which includes questions about the range and frequency of health services a patient uses since discharge from hospital. This provides us information on how much support a health support a patient requires in the community.
- Return to work or study survey includes questions about a patients ability to work or study after their injury as compared to before their injury. This provides us information as to the degree to which the patient's life is returning to normal after their injury.
