About

The NSW Institute of Trauma and Injury Management (ITIM) is an institute within the Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI). We oversee coordinate and support the NSW trauma system.

Trauma is the number one cause of death in people aged 0-45 years in NSW and is one of the top five causes of death for all age groups.

What we focus on

We improve health outcomes for people who sustain traumatic injury.

We do this by:

  • providing leadership in the field of trauma
  • monitoring and coordinating the NSW trauma system
  • supporting clinicians working in the trauma system and others who contribute to injury prevention programs and trauma research
  • being a key facilitator of clinical care review, and monitoring together with education and research
  • raising awareness of trauma as a leading cause of death
  • providing a central point of contact for all clinicians in NSW in relation to trauma.

Structure

We have five core committees which report to an executive committee. All of the committees are multidisciplinary and multi-specialty.

Executive committee

The executive committee supports ITIM to achieve its objectives. It provides advice on strategic direction and establishes and monitors work groups and committees to undertake activities identified in the work plan.

The executive committee meets bimonthly and consists of staff from ITIM and ACI, as well as the chairs of each of the other ITIM committees.

Clinical review committee

This committee is responsible for reviewing trauma incidents and deaths, identifying issues, and providing expert advice. Where appropriate, the committee also assists with communicating ACI initiatives to the trauma network.

The committee conducts mandatory statewide peer reviews of trauma deaths.

Data management committee

The data management committee provides oversight of the governance and functions of the trauma registry and management of data. The key focus is ensuring that the collection, access and use of the data is consistent with the business rules.

Education committee

The education committee provides strategic advice on system-wide education requirements and opportunities. It provides oversight of the education functions of ITIM. The key focus is in promoting and providing direction to collaborative trauma education in NSW.

Research advisory committee

The research advisory committee provides strategic advice on system-wide research issues and opportunities. It oversees the research functions of ITIM. The key focus is in promoting and providing direction to collaborative trauma research in NSW.

Trauma innovation committee

The trauma innovation committee provides clinical subject matter expert advice on feasibility, desirability, execution and implementation of innovative projects. Where appropriate, they also assist in communication of ITIM initiatives to the trauma community.
