Intensive Care NSW (ICNSW) works to ensure people in NSW have timely access to quality intensive care, close to where they live.
Intensive Care NSW (ICNSW) provides a foundation for intensive care clinicians to partner with key stakeholders to:
- support and lead innovation
- ensure adequate and efficient intensive care capacity in NSW
- assist NSW intensive care clinicians achieve outcomes important to patients and their families
- advocate on behalf of NSW consumers and clinicians.
ICNSW is a part of the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI).
Structure
ICNSW is lead by the network manager and clinical director. Clinical co-chairs direct each of the committees and groups.
Executive committee
The executive inform, guide and support ICNSW to complete their work plan and deliverables.
The committee structure ensures there is representation from intensive care clinicians and key stakeholders.
Nurse leaders group
This working group is made up of intensive care nurse leaders across NSW. The group focuses on projects that affect delivery of patient centred care, the intensive care visitor experience and nursing workforce engagement.
Paediatric advisory group
The paediatric intensive care advisory group (PICAG) members are intensive care clinicians. They provide expert advice on paediatric intensive care issues and concerns within NSW. The group supports future direction and delivery of quality intensive care services in the state.
Clinical nurse consultant advisory group
This group is made up of clinical nurse consultants from all NSW local health districts. The group collaborates on current emerging themes and issues to improve intensive care services across the state.
ECMO advisory group
The ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) advisory group provides a forum for analysis and assessment of information regarding the quality of patient care in NSW intensive care units (ICUs) for patients receiving ECMO. This group identifies issues relating to patient safety and looks at the quality of ECMO provision.
Performance working group
This working group provides a forum for the systematic analysis and assessment of information regarding the quality of patient care in NSW ICUs. The group monitors data and identifies issues pertaining to patient safety and quality in ICUs. The group aims to assist NSW ICUs achieve the best possible outcomes for the critically ill.
Intensive care community of practice
This forum brings together clinicians who share a common interest and expertise to network, share and improve knowledge about COVID-19. The community of practice provides updates on COVID-19-related practice. It also provides a forum for discussion and advice related to intensive care services in NSW.

ICCMU
Adult Intensive Care Coordination and Monitoring Unit (ICCMU) was created to provide structured overview of intensive care services in NSW.

Part of the ACI
ICCMU becomes part of the ACI.

2013
ICSN
Intensive Care Service Network (ICSN) established at the ACI to provide clinician working and advisory groups. ICSN is supported by ICCCMU.

Review
Review of ICCMU and ICSN function, purpose and priorities.

2017
ICSN and ICCMU merge
ICSN and ICCMU merged to form Intensive Care NSW as part of ACI.
