High Flow Dry Nasal Prong Oxygen

High flow nasal prong oxygen is used to provide apnoeic oxygenation during intubation to extend the safe apnoea time.

In intubation:

  • Nasal cannula are placed under the facemask during pre-oxygenation

  • Oxygen is delivered at 15L/min

  • High flow nasal oxygen is continued during the tracheal intubation attempts. This is described by the acronym NO DESAT (nasal oxygen during efforts securing a tube) allowing the continued benefits of apnoeic oxygenation
