Westmead Hospital Division of Surgery and Anaesthetics is implementing a number of solutions to improve the surgical journey for Category 5 and 6 emergency patients. The project team identified an opportunity to enhance the patient experience at Concord Hospital by increasing operational efficiency between the sterilising department and operating theatres. Following a review, a range of recommendations were implemented to improve inter-departmental communication and processes, streamline workflows, and enhance workforce morale.

Wollongong Hospital implemented a program to optimise the pre-operative haemoglobin and iron stores of patients undergoing major elective colorectal, upper gastrointestinal tract and orthopaedic surgery. This will prevent avoidable blood transfusions and their complications, along the patient peri-operative journey.

Nepean Hospital established an Obstetric Pre-anaesthetic Assessment Clinic for high-risk obstetric patients and those undergoing an elective caesarean section. Anaesthetists at the clinic assess the patient and explain anaesthetic procedures in a way that allows patients to give informed consent.

Wollongong Hospital established a consultant-led pre-anaesthetic clinic for women with high-risk pregnancies. It ensures women are supported during their pregnancy and delivery, and clinicians are prepared for any medical issues that may arise.
