Supporting women statewide with specialist menopause care

22 Oct 2025 Reading time approximately

The rollout of NSW Health Statewide Menopause Services is now complete, meaning thousands of women who experience severe or complex menopause symptoms can access specialist, multidisciplinary care.

On World Menopause Day, 18 October 2025, the NSW Government announced that all 4 menopause hubs are now live. The hubs are located in South Eastern Sydney, Hunter New England, South Western Sydney and Northern Sydney local health districts, and support 12 referral sites across the state.

The ACI’s Menopause Initiative led the establishment of these services, which put women’s experiences front and centre to provide holistic care and support them to take control of their own health. The services are part of the NSW Government’s commitment to improve access to expert advice for the one in 4 women who experience severe or complex menopause symptoms and address the associated health risks.

Since the services began rolling out in July 2023, more than 6,600 women have received almost 14,000 consultations and treatments, illustrating the demand for specialist menopause care.

The network of menopause hubs and referral sites across NSW ensures that all women, including those in rural and regional areas, can receive expert care and support close to home.

Delivering multidisciplinary, lifestyle medicine

This year, World Menopause Day focused on lifestyle medicine and sought to improve women’s health and wellbeing by raising awareness about the symptoms of menopause and the support options available. The multidisciplinary approach taken by the Statewide Menopause Services aligns with this important theme.

The network of menopause services provides access to multidisciplinary clinical teams. These enable women to address complex health needs associated with menopause, which include increased risk of diabetes and heart, bone and mental health problems.

"Menopause has often been spoken about too little and supported too late, but women now have access to teams that include nursing, allied health, physiotherapy, psychology or psychiatry, dietitians and medical specialists," explains Menopause Initiative Manager Danella Hackett.

"By giving menopause the focus it deserves, we’re helping women to feel seen, heard and supported."

The right care, in the right place, at the right time

To ensure women can receive care as close to home as possible and reduce the need for them to travel long distances during this significant stage of life, virtual care is an integral part of the network of menopause services offered.

"It’s important that women across NSW, regardless of background or situation, can access treatment that helps them better contribute to their families, workplaces, and community," says Laura Worthing, a physiotherapist at the Menopause Referral Site in the Central Coast Local Health District, and co-chair of the ACI’s Menopause Community of Interest.

Patient-reported measures (PRMs) have also been implemented within the services to provide valuable insights into women’s health outcomes and experiences when they access menopause care in NSW. PRMs data shows that our current care model is effectively reaching and engaging with women who have complex or severe symptoms. Early results also indicate that the services are having a positive impact on their lives by alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life.

General practitioners, specialists and nurse practitioners can refer eligible women to a specialist menopause service, with both in-person and virtual consults available.
