The ACI is pleased to host a unique collaboration between Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network (JHFMHN) and Prince of Wales Hospital (POWH) for the August Virtual Care Exchange Forum.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated changes to the delivery of healthcare to support patients in the correctional and forensic system. This minimised the risk of transmission in an environment that involves regular transfer of people between the correctional facilities and POWH.

The Virtual Cardiology Clinic designed in collaboration between JHFMHN and POWH, aimed to ensure ongoing service delivery during the pandemic. Consultations are delivered using myVirtualCare platform. Clinicians have access to real-time 12-lead electrocardiograms, blood results, medication, and observation charts. Patients have face-to-face nursing support. The clinic has resulted in easier access to care, decreased waiting times, increased session utilisation and a decrease in medical transfers and associated costs. Patient reported satisfaction is also very high.

The success of the model can be attributed to the collaborative partnership between the two organisations and is paving the way for scale-up to other specialist services provided by the POWH and other Local Health Districts who partner in the care of our vulnerable, and often very complex patients.
